Mentor Notes #152 - The space between feeling and knowing

Mentor Note #152

Mentor Note:

"Intuition whispers. Fear insists." - Sally Polihronas

Lets Dive in...

Hello Reader,

There are moments in life when the hardest thing isn't making the decision. It's trusting yourself enough not to make it too quickly.

This week I made a decision that had been quietly sitting with me for weeks, actually months.

It wasn't a decision I wanted to rush. In fact, I was determined not to.

I've learnt that some of the biggest mistakes we make happen when we confuse a reaction with intuition. Hurt, disappointment and frustration can all masquerade as clarity if we don't give them time to settle.

So instead of reacting, I watched.

I observed conversations, I noticed patterns, I paid attention to how I felt before, during and after each interaction. Rather than trying to explain myself, defend myself or force a resolution, I simply kept noticing what was consistently revealing itself.

There wasn't one dramatic moment that made the decision for me. There were a series of small moments, each offering another piece of clarity. Until eventually, one final interaction quietly confirmed what I had already known.

By the time I made the decision, there was no anger left, no urgency, no desire to prove a point.

Just peace.

That experience reminded me that one of the greatest acts of self-trust is learning to distinguish between intuition and reaction.

Reaction is immediate, it wants relief and certainty. It wants the discomfort to end and is often fuelled by fear, disappointment or old wounds trying to keep us safe.

Intuition is different.

It doesn't usually arrive in a dramatic flash or demand that we act immediately. More often, it reveals itself slowly, through quiet observation. It doesn't shout over the noise, it simply remains, patiently waiting for us to notice.

Even when intuition asks us to make a difficult choice, it carries a sense of steadiness. It doesn't create chaos or leave us feeling frantic. Instead, it offers a quiet knowing that feels grounded, even when the path ahead is uncertain.

I've noticed that the more I heal, the easier it becomes to recognise the difference. As old wounds lose their grip, my reactions become quieter too. What remains is something much simpler: a calm inner knowing.

Perhaps this is why healing matters so much. The quieter our inner world becomes, the easier it is to hear the voice that was always there beneath the noise.

The Takeaway

Before asking yourself, "What should I do?", ask a different question:

"Am I responding from peace, or reacting from pain?"

The answer often reveals whether you're listening to your deepest wisdom or your oldest wound.

Something to Try

The next time you're faced with an important decision, resist the urge to act immediately.

Give yourself permission to observe instead.

Notice the patterns, pay attention to how your body feels before, during and after each interaction. Let the emotions settle before you decide what they mean.

If, after a few days or even a few weeks, the same quiet knowing is still there, gently waiting for you...

There's a good chance that's your intuition speaking.

I appreciate you!

Until next week,

Much love,

Sally xx

Hello Reader, For most of my life, I have believed deeply in the power of self-awareness. Learning to look inward, understand our reactions and take responsibility for our own emotional world has been one of the greatest gifts I have given myself. I started...

Mentor Note #150 Mentor Note: "The mirror will never smile before you do." - Unknown Lets Dive in... Hello Reader, Ok, I'm going straight in this week because when I read this quote I just had to share it. I literally paused and smiled when I read it. When you first read it, it sounds simple and maybe even obvious. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that most people wait for the outside world to change before they allow themselves to feel different on the inside. You wait...

Mentor Note #149 Mentor Note: "Our lives are shaped by what we repeatedly honour." - Sally Polihronas Lets Dive in... Hello Reader, I came across this quote recently and it stayed with me. "Our lives are shaped by what we repeatedly honour." I think because, as I’ve entered this new chapter of life, I’ve been reflecting on what we give our attention to and how much those small, everyday choices quietly shape who we become. We often think our lives are changed by the big moments. The career...
