Mentor Notes #151 - When grace becomes self-abandonment

Mentor Note #151

Mentor Note:

"There comes a moment in every healing journey when the lesson is no longer learning to forgive; the lesson becomes learning to stop accepting what continues to hurt you." - Sally Polihronas

Lets Dive in...

Hello Reader,

For most of my life, I have believed deeply in the power of self-awareness. Learning to look inward, understand our reactions and take responsibility for our own emotional world has been one of the greatest gifts I have given myself.

I started this work when I was sixteen years old, long before personal growth became something we could access everywhere. I learned that our emotions are messengers and that often the things that trigger us can reveal something within ourselves that needs attention.

And I still believe this.

But I have also come to understand that there is another side to growth that we don't always talk about.

Sometimes, in our commitment to being compassionate and understanding, we can forget to extend that same compassion towards ourselves.

We become so skilled at seeing another person's pain that we stop acknowledging our own.

We explain their behaviour. We make space for their wounds. We search for the lesson.

But sometimes the lesson is not about understanding more.

Sometimes the lesson is about honouring yourself more.

There is a difference between compassion and access. You can understand someone's pain without allowing it to become something you repeatedly carry.

You can forgive someone without continuing to accept what hurts you.

You can choose grace and still choose yourself.

For many years, I thought taking the higher road meant being more patient, more understanding and more willing to see things from another person's perspective.

Now I understand that grace does not mean abandoning yourself.

Sometimes the most powerful act of growth is recognising that enough is enough.

Not from anger.

Not from bitterness.

But from self-respect.

The Takeaway

Growth is not always about becoming softer.

Sometimes growth is about becoming clearer.

Clear about what feels respectful, aligned and what you are no longer willing to carry.

You can have compassion for someone's journey without making yourself responsible for it.

You can understand someone without continuing to accept behaviour that diminishes you.

Sometimes the lesson is not learning how to hold more.

Sometimes the lesson is learning what was never yours to hold.

Something to Try

This week, notice where you may be spending too much energy explaining someone else's behaviour or searching for reasons why they act the way they do.

Ask yourself:

"Am I responding from compassion, or am I abandoning myself?"

Then ask:

"If I truly believed I deserved respect, what would I choose?"

The answer may not always be dramatic.

Sometimes it is a conversation.

Sometimes it is creating distance.

Sometimes it is simply having the courage to say:

"This is no longer something I am willing to accept."

I appreciate you!

Until next week,

Much love,

Sally xx

Mentor Note #152 Mentor Note: "Intuition whispers. Fear insists." - Sally Polihronas Lets Dive in... Hello Reader, There are moments in life when the hardest thing isn't making the decision. It's trusting yourself enough not to make it too quickly. This week I made a decision that had been quietly sitting with me for weeks, actually months. It wasn't a decision I wanted to rush. In fact, I was determined not to. I've learnt that some of the biggest mistakes we make happen when we confuse a...

Mentor Note #150 Mentor Note: "The mirror will never smile before you do." - Unknown Lets Dive in... Hello Reader, Ok, I'm going straight in this week because when I read this quote I just had to share it. I literally paused and smiled when I read it. When you first read it, it sounds simple and maybe even obvious. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that most people wait for the outside world to change before they allow themselves to feel different on the inside. You wait...

Mentor Note #149 Mentor Note: "Our lives are shaped by what we repeatedly honour." - Sally Polihronas Lets Dive in... Hello Reader, I came across this quote recently and it stayed with me. "Our lives are shaped by what we repeatedly honour." I think because, as I’ve entered this new chapter of life, I’ve been reflecting on what we give our attention to and how much those small, everyday choices quietly shape who we become. We often think our lives are changed by the big moments. The career...
