Mentor Notes #117 - Remember Why You Started

Mentor Note #117

Mentor Note:

"Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life." - Confucius

Lets Dive in...

Hello Reader,

This week, I’ve been immersed in my daughter’s dance concerts - tech runs, rehearsals, and all the behind-the-scenes hustle. Watching them reminded me so much of my own life as a performer.

I remember the countless hours of rehearsals, the early mornings, the late nights… and yet, it never felt like work. Not once did I dread stepping on stage.

Every moment of preparation, every run-through, every note or movement I perfected was a privilege. I loved my job and it always made me feel alive.

I was blessed to earn a living doing what I loved, and that is something I carry with me every day.

Watching my daughters now, seeing the same joy and dedication, I’m reminded that when you align with your true calling, even the effort feels effortless.

Discipline becomes devotion, and the work becomes a form of love.

Creative work, like performing or dancing, isn’t just about talent - it’s about commitment. The hours behind the scenes, the repetition, the technical rehearsals… they build mastery, but they also build a relationship with your craft.

The magic happens when you love what you do so much that even the “work” doesn’t feel like work. It’s in that space where discipline meets devotion and where growth, creativity, and fulfilment live.

For creatives, this lesson is invaluable: the effort you put in doesn’t have to feel heavy if it aligns with your soul. When you remember why you started, when you reconnect to the joy that drew you in, every hour becomes a gift, every rehearsal a teacher, and every performance a celebration.

The Takeaway

Your true calling transforms effort into joy. When your work aligns with your soul, the “grind” becomes growth, the preparation becomes presence, and every moment - both behind the scenes and in the spotlight becomes meaningful.

You feel like you are where you are meant to be even when it's hard, and that's why perseverance is the fuel for any creative, it overpowers logic and fulfills your soul.

Something to Try

This week, notice the moments that feel effortless and alive in your own work or creative practice.
✨ Make a short list: three tasks that feel joyful, even if they’re “hard work.”
✨ Reflect on why these moments feel different - how can you create more of them?
✨ Carry that awareness into every project or practice session this week.

I appreciate you!

Until next week,

Much love,

Sally xx

Mentor Note #118 Mentor Note: "Do not wait for the perfect moment. Take the moment and make it perfect." - Zoey Sayward Lets Dive in... Hello Reader, This week, I’ve been reflecting on how often we wait for inspiration, for confidence, or for conditions to feel “just right.” Watching my daughter step into her dance concert and performing a few weeks ago reminded me that the only way to create magic is to start where you are, with what you have, right now. There is never a perfect moment, and...

Mentor Note #116 Mentor Note: “Intuition is the direct messenger of the soul.” - Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Women Who Run With the Wolves Lets Dive in... Hello Reader, I picked up the book, Women Who Run With the Wolves again this week, and it hit me- maybe more than ever, how deeply women have been taught to mistrust their own inner voice. The author, Clarissa writes about intuition as our ancient instinct, our inner wildness, our fierce knowing… and yet so many of us have learned to override...

Mentor Note #115 Mentor Note: Your 8-Year-Old and 80-Year-Old Are Cheering for You - David Perell Lets Dive in... Hello Reader, I read this last week and I just had to use it in this week's Mentor Note. I’ve been reminded a lot lately about why we are really here.Every one of us is doing life, learning, evolving, moving through experiences that feel random but are anything but. I’ve always believed we’re here to fulfil a soul contract, unique to each of us - and nothing happens by chance. The...
