Mentor Note:
Your 8-Year-Old and 80-Year-Old Are Cheering for You - David Perell
Lets Dive in...
Hello Reader,
I read this last week and I just had to use it in this week's Mentor Note.
I’ve been reminded a lot lately about why we are really here.
Every one of us is doing life, learning, evolving, moving through experiences that feel random but are anything but.
I’ve always believed we’re here to fulfil a soul contract, unique to each of us - and nothing happens by chance. The same patterns, challenges, or emotions repeat not to punish us, but because the lesson is calling us to rise, shift, or see something more clearly.
And when you remember this, the pressure to live a perfectly curated life dissolves.
Of course there will be mistakes. Of course there will be those “What the actual F is happening?” moments. They’re not signs you’re failing - they’re part of the path. They arrive to awaken you, strengthen you, or guide you back to who you truly are.
As the Kabbalists teach, everything can be both a gift and a lesson, if we allow it to be.
There’s a version of you who once dreamed without limits, and a version of you who will one day sit with the truth of how bravely you lived.
This week, we reconnect with both.
Your 8-year-old self didn’t care about algorithms, opinions, or whether she “qualified.” She simply played, created, believed. She didn’t worry about being too much or not enough - she just was.
Your 80-year-old self holds the wisdom you sometimes forget:
That most of the things you fear won’t matter.
That the thing that does matter is whether you lived aligned, alive, and awake to your gifts.
When you create, make decisions, or choose a direction - ask yourself:
Would my 8-year-old self feel proud of my courage?
Would my 80-year-old self feel at peace with my choices?
When both say “yes,” you are walking the creative path with integrity, bravery, and soul.
The Takeaway
When you lead from your past innocence and your future wisdom, self-doubt loses power. You return to your truth - and from that place, creative momentum naturally rises.
Something to Try
This week attempt a 3-minute check-in each morning:
- Ask your 8-year-old self: What would feel fun or exciting today?
- Ask your 80-year-old self: What would feel meaningful or aligned?
- Let today’s creative action come from the merge of the two.

It’s that time of year again…
As we move toward Christmas Day, I’m opening the doors to the Mindset Advent Calendar, and I’d love for you to join me.
If you’ve done it before, you already know how grounding it can be - a daily reminder, a moment just for you, and a gentle way to stay aligned and centred during a season that can sometimes feel overwhelming and chaotic.
If you’re joining for the first time, consider it a beautiful little anchor each morning… one message, one shift, one intentional breath to bring you back to yourself.
