Mentor Notes #131 - The Strange Thing About Coming Off Stage

Mentor Note #131

Mentor Note:

“Life is lived in the quiet moments between the applause.” - Sally Polihronas

Lets Dive in...

Hello Reader,

After being back on stage recently, something struck me again.

The contrast.

Performing is electric, fast, loud and energised.
Lights, sound, adrenaline, connection - everything moves quickly and intensely.

There’s a heightened aliveness to it, and then… you return to normal life.

School drop-offs, emails, grocery shopping, writing at the kitchen table and the rhythm of everyday responsibilities.

It’s slower, quieter and less chaotic and sometimes it can even feel… a little boring.

This contrast is something many performers and creatives quietly experience, but don’t often talk about because the stage is designed to amplify life but real life isn’t.

When you perform, your nervous system is flooded with energy. Adrenaline, dopamine, applause, movement and music and it’s a very heightened state of being.

When that moment passes, your system naturally recalibrates.

For years, I used to think the quieter rhythm of everyday life meant something was missing.

That if life didn’t feel electric all the time, maybe I wasn’t doing life right.

But what I’ve come to understand is this:

The stage is an expression of life, it’s not meant to replace it.

The slower grounded moments are what actually sustain you.

They allow you to process, create, reflect, raise your children, build your work, and grow as a human being.

Without those quieter spaces, the stage would eventually consume you.

Without real life, the performance has nothing authentic to draw from.

And the truth is, the woman I am now can hold both.

The performer who feels alive under lights.

And the mentor who sits quietly writing to you like this.

The Takeaway

Creative life isn’t meant to be lived at full volume all the time.

The electric moments are powerful, but they are moments.

The real foundation of a creative life is built in the slower rhythm of everyday living.

The stage may light you up but the quiet spaces are where your depth is formed.

Both are necessary and both shape who you become.

Something to Try

If you’re someone who has experienced big creative highs; performances, launches, projects, moments of recognition - notice what happens when life slows again.

Instead of interpreting the quiet as a loss of momentum, try viewing it as integration.

Ask yourself:

• What part of me needs grounding right now?
• What is this slower season allowing me to build?
• How can I honour both excitement and stillness in my life?

Creative life is not one long standing ovation, its the balance between expression and reflection.

And learning to move between the two is where true sustainability lives.

I appreciate you!

Until next week,

Much love,

Sally xx

Hello Reader, This time next week, I’ll be on a plane to London. It feels both surreal and exciting. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been rehearsing, preparing, packing, and trying to tie up all the loose ends before I leave. On the outside, it probably looks like a lot of practical planning. But underneath it all, something quieter has been unfolding....

Mentor Note #140 Mentor Note: "Uncertainty is often the feeling of expansion before clarity arrives." - Sally Polihronas Lets Dive in... Hello Reader, I've been thinking a lot about change lately and that there’s a moment before everything changes. It’s not loud and it doesn’t arrive with certainty or a perfectly mapped-out plan. It usually feels uncomfortable. The brain is wired to keep you safe, and it tends to interpret anything unfamiliar as a potential threat. Even when you are moving...

Hello Reader, I’ve been in full popstar mode this past week, rehearsing with Bardot for London, and I had a moment in rehearsals that really stayed with me. So I wanted to share it with you. Nothing dramatic happened, it’s okay, lol. But something felt different, actually to be honest, everything has felt different. There was a time, not that long ago, where a week like that would...
