Mentor Notes #119 - Do The Thing That Scares You

Lets Dive in...

Hello Reader,

As the year winds down, I’ve noticed how often fear shapes our decisions, especially for creatives.

I think about the moments I’ve stepped into something new - performances, projects, or personal challenges and how often the unknown felt intimidating.

Yet those are exactly the moments that expanded my confidence, creativity, and capacity to grow.

Watching my daughters tackle their performances this week reminded me how courage is expressed in small, deliberate steps taken even when we’re unsure. It also made me think about how, as children, we make choices without overthinking them - we simply follow what feels fun, interesting, or exciting.

The hours spent at piano lessons, dance classes, tennis courts, and weekend sports weren’t about perfection or outcomes. They were about exploring what we enjoyed, discovering what felt natural, and learning who we were becoming.

Somewhere along the way, adulthood teaches us to second-guess that instinctive curiosity. But the truth is, that childlike bravery - the willingness to try, to experiment, to say “why not?” - is still inside you and waiting for you to follow that lead again.

Fear is not a signal to stop - it is a signal to pay attention. It points to the edges of your comfort zone, where your next growth, creative breakthrough, or opportunity awaits. Often, the action you most resist is exactly what will strengthen your confidence, sharpen your skills, and expand your alignment with your purpose.

Fear and intuition are not opposites - they are allies. Fear shows you the stakes and highlights where courage is needed. Intuition guides you on the most aligned way forward. Together, they point to the path that matters most, if you are willing to step into it.

The Takeaway

The very things we resist most often hold the greatest opportunities for growth. Courage is choosing to act in the presence of fear, trusting yourself, and moving forward anyway.

Something to Try

This week,

  • identify one thing you’ve been hesitant to do because it feels uncomfortable or uncertain.
  • Break it down into a manageable action and take that step, no matter how small.
  • Reflect on how confronting the fear changes your perspective and energy.

I appreciate you!

Until next week,

Much love,

Sally xx

Hello Reader, As the year quietly turns, I’ve noticed how different it feels to begin from a rested place rather than a rushed one. After some time away, slowing down a little, breathing deeper, and living a little more gently, I’ve been sitting with what really matters as we step into what’s next. And what keeps returning to me is this: The...

I hope you are having a great break and that your celebrations have been full of love and joy. My family and I have had a quiet Sydney Christmas this year. It's been really nice and relaxing. Hello Reader, As the year winds down, I always find myself noticing the quiet in those last few days - the space after the busyness, before everything starts again. I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to rush straight into “what’s next” without pausing to check in with ourselves. This space matters the most! Before any resolutions or plans take over, I...
